Confused about lighting? Superior Lighing and Bath serves the East Kootenays & will help to shed some light on your questions

lighting

We’ve been there. Walk into any lighting store and you’ll be blinded by the huge amount of options: flush, semi-flush, recessed, pendant, track and more. Many people can feel overwhelmed with the sheer amount of choice out there. Thankfully, the experts at Superior Lighting & Bath can help explain the differences. Here’s a rundown on the most popular types of lighting:

Flush: Flush lights are mounted right up against the ceiling. They can be installed just about anywhere and are ideal for rooms with a low ceiling (eight feet high or lower).

Semi-Flush: These fixtures are both decorative and functional. They typically hang 7 to 12 centimetres below the ceiling but take up less vertical space compared to pendants. These fixtures are commonly used in kitchens and small dining rooms.

Pendants: Ideal for rooms with tall ceilings, pendants are best installed over dining tables, stairwells, kitchen islands and reading corners. Pendant lights are stylish fixtures that work both as a light source and a decorative element for the room.

Recessed: Recessed lights are embedded in the ceiling and are completely hidden as the lamp’s rim is leveled. These functional lights are used for illuminating a spot, especially to highlight a piece of art or any protruding fixture.

Track lights: Track lights are a series of small light heads or lamps placed on a long track system that can be moved and directed to different areas. They look very stylish and work as small spotlights.

Consider the purpose and style of the room before buying lighting from Superior Lighting & Bath

You’ve narrowed down the type of lighting to buy, but what about personal style? How will the room be used? These are important points to consider. You don’t want bright light in a subdued space like a bedroom, nor do you want dim light in a space where you’ll need bright overhead light, like a kitchen. To help you make the perfect decision for your space, here are five questions to ask yourself:

  1. How much lighting do I want or need in this room? The output of light is measured in lumens. To determine the proper number of lumens needed for a room, take the square footage of the room and multiply it by 40.

  2. What’s the purpose of the room? In a kitchen, a bright overhead light is preferable as well as task lighting—such as under-cabinet lighting— for specific tasks. In a bedroom, you would most likely prefer more subdued lighting.

  3. What’s the style of the room? Take a step back and examine the furnishings and style of the room. Is it ultra-modern? More traditional? Make sure the design of your new lighting complements the existing room.

  4. What type of lighting usually works best in the room? A large chandelier may work well in a large living room but not so well in a small bathroom or foyer. Consider both the size of the room and lighting fixture before you buy.

  5. Do you need accent or task lighting? Adding visual interest or highlighting a particular spot in your space, such as a bookshelf, may be important to you.
