Broek Pork Acres is a pasture to plate operation that raises Heritage Berkshire hogs that are slaughtered, processed and direct marketed to customers both wholesale and retail via their butcher shop and retail store.
What is Berkshire Pork?
Berkshire pork comes from a rare breed of pig that originated in the southeastern English county of Berkshire. It has been revered for its outstanding quality, texture and flavor for over 300 years. This purebred has been known to produce tender, dark, juicy meat with high marbling.
How is it different?
Studies have concluded that Berkshire pigs top most other breeds in such categories as meat marbling, moisture, and tenderness. Berkshire reminds you of what pork used to taste like; sweet and succulent.
Commercial pork is often “water injected” to try to overcome the inherent dryness caused by the lack of marbling. In contrast, the higher fat content and fine marbling of a Berkshire, compliments the rich and distinctive flavor profile of the meat to naturally produce a result that is both flavorful and tender.
The moisture retention capacity of Berkshire meat exceeds that of regular pork; hence it is known for its low drip loss.
The Berkshire Hardiness
The Berkshire pig is a very hardy animal and loves being outside. Even in the winter while there is a lot of snow on the ground, the pigs are out and about, playing and rooting through the snow.
Broek Pork Acres is operated by Allan and Joanne Vanden Broek. They were married in 1990 and since have been blessed with 9 children and 4 grandchildren. Having the children helping along is an important link in the success of their direct marketing family farm.
Coming from a farming background in the Lethbridge area, the Vanden Broeks started a small grain farm in 1994. In 2000 they added a small hog herd. In the spring of 2005, they switched from only hog barns to include a free range Pasture Pork operation. They started direct marketing their products to their customers and found that they could ensure delivery of a fresher product as well as catering to their needs. In 2007 they set up a provincially inspected butcher shop on the farm. They expanded the shop in 2009 and now have a new and larger shop with a storefront.
Broek Pork Acres is passionate about how they farm and enjoy raising their ‘value added pork’ in Southern Alberta. They grow grain and hay for feed, raise their own hogs, process the meat and market their own products. From pasture to the plate, with a hands on approach, their goal is to provide their customers with quality and nutritious products.
How Broek Pork Acres is unique:
Quality rather than quantity:
Broek Pork Acres’s Heritage Breed Berkshire Hogs are a more expensive breed with outstanding quality, texture and flavor. They are not forced fed and are raised in a relaxed and natural environment.
As soon as the piglets are a couple months old, they are allowed outside. They enjoy eating the grass and rooting around in the dirt. When raised on pasture with fresh air and sunshine, the pigs grow up strong and healthy.
- Without unnecessary antibiotics
- Without growth stimulants
- Without animal by products
- Natural, non-GMO feed
Pasture to Plate:
Broek Pork Acres raises their hogs naturally and rent a provincially inspected slaughter facility in order to ensure that they are providing a quality product in a humane environment. They do the processing in their own provincially inspected processing facility back on the farm, once again, ensuring that the quality of all our product can be guaranteed by their own hands.
A Healthy Product:
Pork qualifies as a lean choice of protein, an excellent source of zinc and the best dietary source of thiamine(vitB1). All of Broek Pork Acres’s meat is gluten free and provincially inspected and sold in Alberta. The meat also has non GMO ingredients and no MSG, fillers, binders or added water.
Marcus Neels said, “Product is amazing. The service is top notch; this is a family-run business and they are very friendly and take customer service to the next level. The pigs are allowed to roam freely throughout pasture and are always very happy. Definitely will be going there often and for all my pork needs.”
Diana de Leeuw said, “Super friendly staff and awesome products!”
