What is the Institute of Movement’s approach to chiropractic care, and how do you incorporate it with other treatment modalities?

Chiropractic is a hands-on therapy aimed at treating the source of neuromusculoskeletal problems not just the symptoms. It is a natural, non-invasive, conservative method of health care. Chiropractors respect the human body’s natural ability to heal itself, and use manipulation of the joints and soft tissues to affect the nervous system and provoke this natural healing response.

Special attention is focused on proper diagnosis, treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal disorders, as well as the associated effects that these disorders have on the nervous system and the patient’s general health.

Here at the Institute of Movement, we are proud to work together to create a truly integrated, multi-disciplinary clinic that enables you to conveniently access all of the best modalities to make up your personal treatment and rehabilitation plan.

If recommended for your condition, adjacent to your chiropractic treatment we offer the option of neuromuscular acupuncture to increase effectiveness and the longevity of relief. These two treatment modalities work together in a complementary way. Acupuncture can relax extremely tight muscles prior to chiropractic treatment or can be used afterwards to further encourage muscles to remain in their relaxed state, thus preserving the therapeutic corrections that were made.

Acupuncture and registered massage therapy are offered independently and often recommended between chiropractic treatments to enhance positive effects and boost wellness between adjustments.

I’ve never been to a chiropractor before. What should I expect during a chiropractic treatment?

On your first visit, your chiropractor will conduct a thorough health history to obtain an in-depth understanding of your current health concern and an overview of your general health status. A physical exam will follow to determine the cause of your health concern. This may include range of motion, global movement patterns, palpation/identification of affected tissues, neurological testing, orthopedic testing, specific testing based upon your sport/work demands or performance testing.

Based on the findings in your health history and physical examination, your chiropractor will provide you with a diagnosis and create a personalized treatment plan that addresses your current health concerns. We may refer you to your medical doctor if we suspect an underlying cause of your condition that requires additional testing such as blood work and diagnostic imaging or a referral to a medical specialist.

Our goal then is to bridge the gap between your current physical capacity and your life-specific demands to get you moving and feeling better. We want to prevent re-injury and musculoskeletal disorders, as well as the associated effects that these disorders have on the body.
